Five decisions, in the order our engineers make them. Each one narrows the next.
Start with the media, not the pressure
The grade is chosen against what flows through the hose. SS 304 covers compressed air, water, steam and inert gases in clean service. Any chloride content — seawater, brine, bleach, coastal air — means SS 316L; the 2–3% molybdenum is what resists pitting, and 304 in chloride service is false economy. Sustained heat means SS 321, stabilised with titanium so carbide does not precipitate at the grain boundaries.
Check the temperature against the grade
SS 304, 304L and 316L are rated to +425°C for continuous service. Only SS 321 goes to +700°C. All grades run down to −270°C for cryogenic duty. Above 20°C the working pressure falls, and the amount it falls by is set by the ISO 10380 correction factor for that grade — not a single figure across the range.
Correction factorsLet the braid carry the pressure
The corrugated core is pressure-tight but not pressure-bearing; the wire braid over it is what contains the load. Hoses are supplied unbraided, single-braided or double-braided, and each layer raises the working pressure and the outside diameter. Every assembly we ship is hydrostatically tested to 1.5× its rated working pressure.
Check a pressure ratingMatch the pitch to the movement
Convolution pitch trades pressure capacity against flexibility. Series 11 is standard pitch and holds the most pressure. Series 12 is close pitch, balancing the two. Series 13 is extra close pitch for the tightest bend radius and frequent flexing. The forming method sets the flexibility within that: mechanically formed (MF), hydroformed (HF) or elastomer formed (EF).
Compare the seriesThen fix the size and the ends
Bore runs from 1/4" to 12" (6–300 mm). End fittings are welded to suit — flanges, threaded nipples, union nuts or camlock couplings — and the assembly is tested as a unit, not as loose parts. Send us the media, temperature, pressure and length and we will come back with a specification.
